Quite useful, with obvious improvements needed
TotalReader might actually be “the BEST eBook reader” as the developers like to advertise. I’ve tried some. None seem to be as good. But that unfortunately doesn’t mean it is a great app. It’s good, though. It can open any format you may care to read, to begin with. This is probably the strong suit of the app. Also, it’s quite a handsome app; something that I think is of significance for people who buy Apple devices rather than other brands. For eBook reading (ebup, etc.), you have tons of choices of fonts. I personally find this annoying, but some may regard it as richness, so there… Again for eBooks, you can (re)adjust brightness by a simple swipe (rather than opening a dialog first), much like some media player apps. Good thinking. On another note, the online catalog feature allows one to browse for potential eBooks one may wish to add to their library. There is a longer list of things that are not so good, I'm afraid... First of all, there is no support for the app. The website of the developers is deserted. It would be a shame, because these people were capable of producing something quite decent. The http interface doesn't allow up/downloading multiple files at once. It's a drag... (Unless there was something wrong with my browser.) The global default settings do not take! I.e., no matter what I set, the books open with some weird linespacing, fontsize, etc. They keep resetting. And, when I try to set the default linespacing to +2 or more, the app crashes. So I have to manually do it for each file, which defeats the purpose of having defaults. (The linespacing does not crash; it works for per-file settings.) For my purposes of using this app, it's not that crucial, but vertical scroll would be nice. So many readers/annotators out there with no vertical scrolling... One wonders if there is some kind of patent issue... A very important missing feature is the ability to follow hyperlinks within the book (e.g., check out a reference at the end) and come back *easily*. One would also benefit from rudimentary markup capabilities. Nothing serious. I would just like to highlight nice passages, etc. Shouldn't be that hard (a non-developer speaking). The following is also somewhat annoying. When you change settings while you're reading an ebook, say fontsize, it takes a while until the document is re-rendered with the new settings. But maybe you made a mistake, maybe that fontsize is still no good? Then you have to wait until the re-rendering is complete in order to make further adjustments. Again, it may be easy to fix. All in all, TotalReader is a good app to do most of your reading. If it were improved, perhaps you would do all of your reading with it.
